Your most meaningful family traditions

In spite of the bickering and chaos families go through, family traditions are a great way to keep families bonded and happy. They shape future memories that are warm, laughable and insightful.

I am married with two daughters and a son, my wife and I were brought up in strict African traditions that seemed to be part of everyday life. The African family with its culture and tradition has today degraded with modernization. Our children spend hours everyday watching screen-television, video and computer. It is with these that we decided to unearth four of our tradition activities in order to bring up children that can think independently, care for the community, respect, learn to work and a gain whole variety of moral attributes.

In the endeavor to en-culture good character and personality, we agreed to do certain family activities every year. While we still stick to the normal eating together, going to church and telling bedtime stories, we thought it prudent to indulge in four major traditions every year.

1. Easter holidays

2. Christmas holidays

3. birthday celebrations

4. monthly outings

Since Easter holidays are not given as much attention as Christmas we decided to remember every Easter by visiting animal farms as a family. We take our children to giraffe center where they enjoy the day feeding giraffes and playing with the monkeys. This center is a fun place to be, situated in the outskirts of Nairobi namely Karen area. At the giraffe center, we enjoy the traditional cuisine of African traditional foods as we watch others feeding the giraffes or running around with the monkeys. This specific outing is always helpful in that we all free ourselves from the rigorous daily chores as we relax and admire each other’s presence. It has been a good way to bond and respect each other’s presence, immediately we go home everybody is in a good mood and ready to do good for each other.

Riding the ostriches is yet another activity we set to enjoy every Easter. Ostrich farm is located in Langata area of Nairobi. We set to explore local tourism sites because they are affordable with a lot of fun. Although my first daughter has ostrich riding phobia, she loves to watch others ride as she takes the video captions. She loves to capture extra-ordinary happenings like an ostrich which has refused to be ridden or another that is being chased around being asked to behave in the presence of visitors. Ostrich riding is a laughable event and you should see how
